ACORN Investigation Update: Cleared of Criminal Activity Charge

On Thursday, community organizing group ACORN was exonerated of any criminal activities charge even though found to be engaged in “highly inappropriate behavior” by California Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown in a report.

The report said, “ACORN in California was disorganized and very poorly managed,” adding, “It failed to recruit, train and monitor its employees to ensure compliance with California law.”

The report also noted, “The evidence illustrates that things are not always as partisan zealots portray them through highly selective editing of reality,” and, “Sometimes a fuller truth is found on the cutting-room floor.”

Brown’s report pointed out that ACORN probably violated state civil laws by disposing of thousands of pages containing confidential information about employees, members and other individuals in a trash bin, failing to file a 2007 state tax return and engaging in four instances of possible voter registration fraud in San Diego.

The ACORN investigation into their California operations was launched by Brown’s office in September last year at the behest of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, in view of the notorious videos released showing ACORN ( the Assn. of Community Organizations for Reform Now ) employees telling people the ways to get into prostitution and other illegal activities.

ACORN funding was also an issue as it did not document how it used charitable funds raised for the victims of Southern California wildfires, as the report noted. But the investigation “determined that ACORN spent more than it likely raised for the fire victims, and therefore further action into this issue is not a wise use of the state’s resources,” as per the report.

On Thursday, ACORN shut down bogged down by the videos controversy and government investigations launched ever since the ACORN scandal broke out.
